Klipsch Reference Series RS52 Surround Speaker (EACH) Review

Klipsch Reference Series RS52 Surround Speaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am using these Klipsch RS-52 on sides along with Klipsch RC-62 Center, RB-61 Fronts, Synergy S1 front highs & backs with a still working superbly 10yr old Definitive Technology 12" 700watt Sub Woofer and a new Onkyo NR807 Receiver for a 9.1 setup in a 22' X 12' living room setup system longways.

The RS-52 picks up all kinds of sound effects watching movies that would by comparison have a muffled & stifled sound with just a ordinary 'surround back' type speakers.Works excellent watching Football, Hockey, etc.I was given a demo of the RS-42 at a local electronics retailer but they did not have those in stock and gave me the RS-52 at the RS-42 price (one lucky day). The RS-52 have 5 1/4" woofers, RS-62 have 6 1/2" woofers and RS-42 have 4" woofers. The difference between the models for the sides is basically the BOOM & SPATIAL EFFECT especially watching movies and Music DVD Concerts depending how you set your audio setting on your receiver. I would have been satisfied with the RS-42 model in my small living room but even yet would notice the difference. It is just a bigger fuller sound with the higher model you go up.Just make sure your fronts and center match specs to a degree. My RB-61 Fronts have 6 1/2" and RC-62 Center 6 1/2" woofers.

I first had these setup at ear level but read the actual Manual that came with it which instructed to put them 5' to 7' above the ground so they are set over your head while sitting down.I got a total theater immersion experience when setting them up that way. Before when they were at ear level, they were good, but more acute rather then immersible.I would twist my head to the speaker at ear level when hearing a funky special effect sound but when setting them above head level will notice surround sounds but similar to when you go to the theater. It doesn't distract you, rather aids in the over all surround sound experience. The sides with be the most effective surround sound speaker you will have in comparison the Front High, Wide or Backs so the extra cost\quality ratio you spend on the sides is important.Indeed, if you are doing a 5.1 setup, get the sides rather than backs for your surround sound speakers.

These sides are sold as singles and not pairs no matter what model you decide upon, so make sure you budget and buy a quantity of 2.

Product Description:
Revealing surprising layers of detail, the Reference Series RS-52 brings a huge dose of reality and convenience to the world of surround sound. With its superior technology and elegant design, this speaker lets you hear everything in its full glory. Adopting a completely new cabinet and driver layout that is similar to the Klipsch THX(R) Ultra2 KS-525-THX surround speaker, the RS-52 establishes greater output, improved coverage and increased power handling to further extend Klipsch's best-in-class surround sound performance. Exclusive Tractrix(R) Horns have always been the key component of the Reference Series. In the RS-52, this technology has been refined to include improved throat geometry for a more genuine, lifelike sound. Behind the speaker's dual horns lie 1-inch titanium tweeters with powerful neodymium magnet motor structures to provide a unique combination of precision, clarity and effortless dynamics. The RS-52 employs dual 5.25-inch woofers for a solid bass foundation. These Cerametallic(TM) woofers with inverted copper dust caps exhibit a very high stiffness-to-mass ratio and superb damping characteristics. Klipsch Wide Dispersion Surround Technology(TM) (WDST) provides crystal-clear sonic detail even in listening areas with less than ideal configurations. The Tractrix Horns deliver a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern. By aligning two horns at 90-degrees with respect to each other, WDST smoothly covers a 180-degree horizontal arc. In other words, the surround sound is pointed at you no matter where you are seated. While increased baffle ribbing around the horn mouth dramatically improves acoustics across the sonic range, the crossover utilizes Klipsch custom internal wiring and the finest components to provide signal purity and perfect driver integration.

Polk Audio CSW100 Passive in-floor/in-ceiling subwoofer Review

It's not perfect, but it's darn good. I bought 2 for my living room, which is 12x18, and it rocks pretty hard. I built a "false" wall to house these, a left and right in-wall speaker and a center channel, as well as to hide the wires to my TV which is wall mounted. My only regret is not doing enough to make the framing sturdier because these puppies shake the wall. They're great. I'm sure it's the nature of the enclosure (I'm not a sound engineer or anything), but the response isn't even... and they're not as crisp as I'd like, but they are great and I'm glad I bought them. I use the Polk SWA500 to power them and it does great. In fact, I have to turn it to about 2/3 when I watch movies because it's just too much.

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black) Review

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's true that this system won't replace a setup with true surround speakers, but it's a good compromise for some situations.I have a small TV room and a wife that didn't want surround speakers on the walls.I also didn't want to rip up the walls to conceal wiring or in-wall speakers.Fortunately the room is rectangular and has hard surfaced walls which makes it a good fit for the YSP-900.If you are considering it, keep in mind that it bounces sound off the side and back walls to substitute for the missing left, right, and surround speakers.Without a good surface in the right place then it won't perform well.In my situation it sounds quite good.I hear a convincing stereo image that extends well beyond the device and enveloping surround effects.Dialogue clarity is excellent.

Other points to consider:

- The YSP-900 may seem expensive but remember that it includes a surround processor and amp so you just plug in your audio sources and go.This also reduces clutter in the minimal installations that the device is well-suited for.
- The bass output is weak so you definitely will want to add a subwoofer.
- If you are planning on wall-mounting, you will need to buy the SPM-K30bracket which is NOT included. If you have a wall-mounted flat panel TV the YSP-900 will look great under it.

Product Description:
The Yamaha YSP-900BL Digital Sound Projector applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams to provide multi-surround sound enjoyment from a single compact component. The center channel sound is heard directly while the sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system but without the need for extra speakers.

The YSP-900BL delivers multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners in the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers do. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. The digital amplifier individually drives 21 sound beam drivers at 2W each and two woofers at 20W each for a total of 82W of power to deliver true multi-channel surround sound for this elegant home theater system.

I bought these for dual purposes; to improve audibility in my home theater setup, and to allow me to listen to music through that setup without being frustrated by the typical home theater's audio quality. These are superb for both uses. They give an open, clear, balanced sound no matter where you sit. They give excellent audio detail. You hear things in the music you did not know were there. They have a 'precise' sound. My main speakers are Mirage OM-9's, they were 3K and the top of their line when I got them. These speakers with my home theater subwoofer are quite close and I don't lose much except a bit of base tightness when I move from one system to another. If you're looking for clean, detailed, precise sound, I recommend these very highly.

Make sure you really consider that the footprint of this speaker is 12" deep, about 24 inches left to right, and it weighs over 30 pounds!I mean really plan where exactly you plan to put this thing because it is a monster of a center, especially if you are used to 5.25 inch woofers or smaller units..I will add that If you want True, clear, sound that can be heard even in lower volumes and wont be drowned out by large Front speakers this is the one for you, but the other reviewer hit the nail on the head when he suggested that if your Sub is decent, the cost vs. benefit of the 6.5 inch woofers over the 5.25" ones in the RC52 is not worth it, In fact I would say that unless you intend on playing music through your center channel,go with the 52 which has the same Tractix Horn and clean Dialog from the quality reference crossovers.

Product Description:
As the leading supplier to the cinema industry, Klipsch understands that a movie falls apart if every whisper of dialog is not heard. With its superior technology and elegant design, the Reference Series RC-62 center channel delivers all of the detail, subtleties and dynamics required for the ultimate home theater experience. Exclusive Tractrix(R) Horns have always been the key component of this critically acclaimed series. In the RC-62, this technology has been refined to include improved throat geometry for a more genuine, lifelike sound. Behind the horn lies a 1-inch titanium tweeter with a large ceramic motor structure to provide a unique combination of precision, clarity and effortless power. The RC-62 employs dual 6.5-inch woofers for a solid bass foundation. These Cerametallic(TM) woofers with inverted copper dust caps exhibit a very high stiffness-to-mass ratio and superb damping characteristics. Klipsch Tapered Array(TM) technology operates both woofers at the lowest frequencies - maintaining the high output capability necessary for good center channel performance - but only one operates all the way through the midrange to where the tweeter takes over. This eliminates acoustic interference between the woofer outputs, a flaw in conventional speaker designs that can severely impair sound quality at the sides of the listening area. The RC-62's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound. Twin front-firing ports eliminate turbulence noise, while increased baffle ribbing around the horn mouth dramatically improves acoustics across the sonic range. For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RC-62 features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

Product Description:
Over twenty years ago, Mirage revolutionized the audio industry by introducing M-1, the world's first bipolar speaker. Dramatically increasing sound dispersion and turning flat recordings into full-bodied, near-realistic performances, the M-I quickly set the standard in speaker performance. Mirage has done it again. With the Mirage OmniSat 13465 Omnipolar Speaker, Mirage's unique patent-pending Omnipolar technology radiates sound in a full, 360-degree, spherical spectrum that will envelop you in a world of sound that you've never experienced before.

Mirage's OmniSat Omnipolar speaker.
Finest components, top to bottom. View larger. Patent-Pending Omnipolar Technology
Mirage OmniSat Speakers use Omnipolar technology that relies on natural room reflections to produce a greater sense of realism, as well as create a deep, wide and tall sound stage. This phenomenon is accomplished by recreating the same ratio of direct to reflected sound found in nature--70 percent reflected and 30 percent direct. It is the additional reflected sound provided by the speaker that creates the Omnipolar three-dimensional sound experience.
Another way to think about it is to picture yourself at a live music performance or at the theater. The sounds you hear come not just directly from the performers, but are also reflected off the walls, ceiling, floor and other objects. While our brains use direct sound to recognize where it is coming from, it is the reflected sound that provides the sense of space and adds depth to musical performances. What this means to you is that once you've set up your speaker system, it almost doesn't matter where you sit. Unlike traditional speakers, there is no "sweet spot" for you to best appreciate the music. With the OmniSat 13465, the best seat in the house is just about anywhere you choose to sit.
To achieve this stunning experience, Mirage has built into the OmniSat 13465 some of the finest components, materials, manufacturing techniques and cutting-edge technologies that you'll find in any speaker. The OmniSat 13465 features the latest generation of Mirage's Pure Titanium Hybrid (PTH) tweeter. PTH tweeters have earned worldwide recognition for their crystal clear and lifelike high-frequency reproduction, low distortion, and wide dispersion.
The PTH tweeter dome is mated to a compliant cloth suspension, eliminating the harsh ringing effect often found with metal domes. The small, new Mirage mid-bass driver is constructed with injection-molded polypropylene, impregnated with graphite, carbon, and mica, and is titanium-coated to provide increased strength and rigidity in a super-light cone.

Omnipolar technology radiates sound in a full 360 degree spherical spectrum. View larger. To help create the lifelike Omnipolar effect using only two drivers, the speaker's dispersion modules are strategically positioned, conical shaped cylinders that disperse the sound from the drivers in a spherical direction. To achieve its tight and accurate bass response, Mirage utilizes polypropylene titanium deposit hybrid cones with Santaprene surrounds. Briefly, the cones are subjected to a titanium deposit process that gives them an ideal stiffness-to-weight ratio, while the Santaprene surrounds provide better strength and flexibility than rubber or foam.
The OmniSat 13465 provides 150 watts of total power with a frequency response of 70 Hz-20 kHz (+/- 3 dB). Add to all of this magnetic shielding that allows the speaker to be placed next to or on top of a television without causing interference to the picture and high-quality, five-way binding posts that allow the use of high-gauge speaker wire and connectors, and there you've got a speaker that offers tremendous sound reproduction and performance.
The Mirage Design
Mirage's revolutionary Omnipolar speakers break free from conventional speakers with a compact, circular design and an elegant platinum/black finish that will fit and perform flawlessly in virtually any room.
At a mere seven pounds and measuring 8 x 6.25 x 8 inches (HxWxD), the OmniSat 13465 is compact enough to sit on practically any horizontal surface in your room. It is also designed to allow for several installation options. The speaker is equipped with a dual key-way bracket for simple wall installation with just one screw, and it also comes with a clip that makes installing it on the ceiling a breeze. You can also purchase an optional OmniSat stand in either white or platinum/black for easy placement anywhere in your room.
In addition to platinum/black, the speakers come in three additional color options: black, white, and platinum. Perfect for music, or the ideal way to create a remarkable home-theater experience when used in combination with the Mirage Omni S8 13698 8-inch Subwoofer, the OmniSat 13465 will enhance your listening experiences with sound that you'll not soon forget.

Great speakers for the money! Provide very clear and good overall audio quality.A little lacking in the lower mid-range, but a subwoofer will make up for that.

I paired these with an Infinity PS12 Subwoofer and they haven't let me down.

The other review by Matthew Smith "IBI", noted the lacked mid-range.Well if you did your research which you definitely didn't you would notice the frequency response for these is:

Frequency Response
100Hz - 20kHz (±3dB)

With the frequency response dropped off at 100Hz, that pretty much requires a subwoofer to bring up the lower frequencies. These were meant to be part of a 5.1 system.

After purchasing four Polk Audio RTi4s for my front and surround speakers, I replaced my Polk Audio CS245 center with the CSi3. The CS245 was a great speaker that was a good match to my old pair of AR15s. However, it didn't provide a perfect match to the RTi4s. The RTi4s and CSi3 now provide a seamless soundstage with clear highs for dialog as well as natural mids and good bass. Two friends have surround systems from Energy, which provide excellent sound quality for movies. However, I prefer my setup for music and am entirely satisfied with my Polks for movies.

This speaker offers terrific sound for the price.I've got it paired with the RC80 ceiling speakers and RC80i front speakers and have been very impressed by its performance.Installation is really as easy as they say - I'm a wreck as a "handyman" but with a level and the included template, I was able to install it perfectly myself. The bevel around the outside edge actually gives you about an inch of "wiggle room" if you screw up the cutting a bit.

Jamo Sub 250 Subwoofer (Single, Black) Review

Jamo Sub 250 Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

i cant understand why but the fuse blew after two minutes of this being used, and after replacing the fuse, the same thing happened again. i imagine that this is not common and i am guessing this was a rare malfunction but for all i know it could be a design flaw. the sound it made was better than any 8 inch subwoofer i have heard, but i had very little time to listen to it, and it is limited a little by its woofer size. if youre looking for very loud and very low bass, this might be too restrained and limited, but it is built very well, sounded precise and clean, has many features, and klipsch was very helpful when i called to troubleshoot (klipsch now owns jamo and is apparently beginning to limit their sales more to europe, where theyre much more popular, i think i might have bought the last of these actually) if you want to risk the slight possibility of malfunction and dont want the lowest, loudest bass, this is an excellent speaker, but not the best for its price, im looking at a BIC v1020 (cheaper, same build quality, lower bass from a 10" woofer, similar features). i expected a little more bass since the 6.5" woofers in my Jamo s 406 floorstanders matched my old sony 8" sub. Jamo makes some very very good speakers but this was an unpleasant experience involving the hunting down of some uncommon and now useless fuses.

Product Description:
The Jamo Sub 250 subwoofer is equipped with an 8" subwoofer unit housed in a unique slotted port cabinet. It features a powerful BASH amplifier capable of delivering 250W of peak power. Relative to its size and price, the SUB 250 delivers outstanding performance and is capable of producing bass frequencies down to 30 Hz. The SUB 250 has a very flat frequency response which allows it to play bass notes in a very convincing manner as compared to many conventional bass-reflex subwoofers. That response extends all the way up to 150Hz. This is important because the output from many subwoofers falls off dramatically at above 100Hz (or even lower with some models) making them very hard to integrate with smaller speakers.

Polk Audio RM202 Center Channel Speaker
Average Reviews:

I bought the RM202 mainly for its compact size and to blend in with an all Polk 5.1 system. It replaces a Sony center speaker which was there mainly becaise it has the same logo as the Sony projection TV, though the sound quality of the Sony speaker has never been satisfactory.

The RM202 is a much better speaker.Like all Polk speakers, it is well-built.Smartly sized, it produces very good sound; dialogue is clear, sound is warm enough and works very well with the rest of the Polk speakers. I especially like its smooth appeareance.

I generally like to maintain an understated appeareance of the speakers to go with the rather conservative look of the Sony RPTV.To this end the Polk speakers, including the RM202, are terrific. They are alsoexcellent for both music and movies for what I need.

Very good product at a great price.Ordering experience at Amazon is very good as always.

Highly recommended.

Product Description:
Intended for center channel use within a Polk RM series speaker system--such as the 6800, 6900, 7300, or 7400--the RM202 is sleek and stylized, with a sculpted anodized-aluminum enclosure that looks terrific next to a plasma or flat-screen TV. The speaker offers more than just a pretty face, however. The unique curved shape also breaks up internal standing wave resonance, helping create a pure, more lifelike sound, while the PowerPort venting and dynamic balance technologies produce rich, full-bodied, big-speaker results from a compact housing. As part of a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 speaker system, the RM202 helps create a dramatic, remarkably clear sound stage for DVDs and other multichannel formats.
The RM202 is equipped with dual 3.5-inch polymer composite cone midrange drivers for clear, distortion-free midrange and a high-performance 0.75-inch silk/polymer composite dome tweeter for sweet, crisp highs. The PowerPort venting, which hides under the grille, also extends and strengthens the lower midrange performance to ensure a seamless blend with the subwoofer output. The resulting midrange makes movie dialogue and other midrange frequencies sound rich and natural. The sound also disperses broadly throughout the room so everyone can enjoy the results regardless of where they're sitting.
Listeners have several installation options: they can mount the speaker on the wall using the included swivel bracket (which offers hidden wire channels), they can use the threaded insert to mount the speaker on a fully articulating bracket (sold separately), or they can place the speaker on the included center cradle, which aims the speaker toward the listener from above or below the TV. And to top it off, the speaker is magnetically shielded against video interference, so you needn't worry about distorting the image on your state-of-the-art TV or video monitor. The speaker, which measures 12.5 by 4.5 by 5.06 inches (W x H x D), offers five-way binding post connections and is backed by a five-year warranty.

I took a chance and bought these over Bics DV 62-clrs.The DV 62-clrs are very big 10" deep with out the lacquer finish. The VK-6LCR are a very nice looking speaker and are 6" deep with a black lacquer finish. There are obviously other differences in the speakers but if you are interested in Wall Mounting them the 4" difference is quite a lot.I think from purely a sound quality point of view the DV62s are hard to beat, however I haven't listen to both to confirm, but the DV62s have a lot of reviews to support them, where as these VK-6s don't.I got three VK-6LCRs for the front 3 of my 5.1 surround sound system, replacing the Energy Takes that were there before.

I was really concerned as there was virtually nothing on the internet on either the forums, professional reviews, or consumer reviews to help with the decision.I took a gambel and bought these basically because I wanted a black lacquer finish and the technical information given on Bics website. With the Energy Take center channel I felt that voices were hard to hear and music was a little tinny.I never liked stereo sound with the Energy speakers, now I'm finding I prefer stereo over the moc 5.1 sound coming from my Denon receiver when listening to music. I just finished watching the new Star Trek movie, in TrueHD, and wow these speakers deliver compared to the Energy Takes. To top it off I really am happy with the way they look on my wall in the living room.

This being the first review, I hope this may help someone else that is considering purchasing these.Shop around prices vary considerably from one day to the next. Another big reason I purchased these over the DV 62-clrs was the price point Amazon had these at when I purchased them, shipped they were only very close in price at the time.Since than prices have risen quite substantially. There are however other vendors which sell them for less, if you look around. I posted a couple pictures as well.enjoy

I purchased the five Nono migage and woofer, With the Surround system on the television the sound is fantastic however I did detect a tinny sound on some of the movies and in perticular with the wife playing the CD thru it the center speaker seemed to be more prononced. I purchased the NANO CC and even to my delight I am astounded by the difference and by the true sound that comes from my system now, both highs and lows. So if you're just using the five satalites for surronud on the movies you won't go wrong but I do suggest the NANO CC for your total listening conmfort.

Klipsch Icon X Series XL-23 LCR speaker (Individual) Review

We were redoing our audio/video equipment after upgrading our HD TV and chose to replace our front speakers and the center channel. At the audio store they played action videos as well as musical concerts for us to hear a variety sounds/music. We made a preliminary choice, but had second thoughts. I went back with a movie featuring dialog since the center channel bears the main load for this. We asked them to isolate the center channel speakers only. It totally changed our pick. This speaker (played laying on its side - it is designed to go either way) reproduced voice most crisply among the choices under $500. We then tried a concert featuring classical guitar and again it was the hands down best choice. Excellent at both tasks. We trusted our ears not data. By the way, our front speaker choice is a pair of Definitive Technologies Studio Monitor 350's. Another great choice for the under $500 price point.Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350 Speakers (Pair, Black)

Klipsch Reference Series RF62BK Floor Standing Loudspeakers (EACH) Review

Klipsch Reference Series RF62BK Floor Standing Loudspeakers

I purchased a pair of these speakers from a local shop as part of an overall upgrade of my home audio system. They replaced a pair of Bose 501's, and are paired up with a Harman Kardon 3390 (an Amazon bargain rated at 80 watts per channel) which replaced an older 90 watt per channel Yamaha receiver.

Everyone likes something a little different in their speakers, so anyone considering a major purchase like this would do well to audition them.I usually have a bias towards a clear high end, even if it comes at the expense of bass.I generally view bass-heavy speakers as being made for youngsters, and I'm certainly not one at age 58.However, these speakers have a very pronounced lower end, and I really like them. It's a very clear and smooth sounding bass, and the high end is much the same - clear and well defined.I didn't expect to find both features in one speaker, nor did I expect to be so impressed with the quality of the sound. These speakers produce sound that is big but also complete, well rounded and pleasing to the ear. They were the clear stars of the show when compared to the other speakers at the store.I should disclose that the comparisons were made with a 90 watt per channel receiver which would tend to favor more efficient speakers like this.A power source of 120 watts or more may have produced a different winner among the speakers.Or maybe not - these things are tough to beat.

A couple things for the potential buyer to be aware of:1.These speakers are quite large and will easily dominate a small room both physically and acoustically.2.They are highly efficient, requiring very little power to produce a lot of sound. At higher volumes, they will part your hair, but they still sound great at low volume.3.Although the bass end is fully developed, they are still what many would call "bright" because of the clear and strong high end (most likely due to the horn tweeters), so they should be paired with a receiver that is not especially bright in order to avoid creating a harsh sound.A lot of the Yamaha products would fall into the "bright" category, so HK or Marantz might be a better choice in this application.

One other consideration that may or may not be important to everyone (it was to me) - they are made in the USA.
