(More customer reviews)I'll start by saying I'm not an Audiophile.I just wanted a decent mid-range receiver that does all the latest lossless audio formats and has 7.1 channels so it's ready to take advantage of BluRay as that format evolves.So my primary focus is on a system that plays audio for movies and video games as it's primary function.Currently I have this receiver setup in a 5.1 configuration since that's the type of receiver it replaced.I have more speakers on order to expand it out but to be honest, right now if you're building a home theater from scratch, you only need 5.1 .The 7.1 specs aren't really supported yet and DVDs and Playstation/Xbox are all 5.1, so if you're starting from scratch save some money and setup for 5.1 first and expand as support grows.

I used the automated speaker calibration feature to setup all the channels.This is where you place the provided mic at ear level at three different listener positions.The receiver then sends out tones which will drive you and your dog nuts for about 15 minutes while the entire process goes on.Once it was done however, I was/am very pleased with the results.

I've heard some people ask about humming, i can detect no humming.I have some WiFi equipment close by which is 2.5 ghz and so far have not heard any humming.Some other people have said the Receiver runs hot to which I would ask those people, is this your first receiver?They do run hot !This one runs no hotter than the old one i replaced from a different manufacturer so as far as I'm concerned, the heat issue is normal.I have it in a small component rack that's enclosed on the sides and back with a door on the front, it's got maybe half an inch space around the sides and 2 inches of space on top and so far everything is good.

The back has tons of inputs, but the primary reason I waited for the 606 over the previous model is the number of HDMI ports, the next generation audio/video cable which is a requirement for full resolution BluRay playback.They're rev 1.3a to support all the latest audio formats as well (none of which are currently supported by the discs themselves yet though).The receiver will pass through a 1080p signal from a BluRay or other high def video source.If you feed it a standard def 480i video source, it will upscale it to 1080i or 720p.It does a decent job but i would say upscaling isn't the receivers strong point, it does an acceptable job though.But lets face it, Onkyo doesn't build TV's, their bread and butter isn't video, it's audio.

I'm pleased with the performance and the styling of the receiver, it's just very basic and sleek.No built in graphical user interface and all that other nonsense that receivers 3x this price but no more times the performance come equipped with.This receiver for a mid end system for movies and video games just really can't be matched in terms of performance per dollar spent.

I have matched this receiver with some Polk Audio speakers.Specifically i have a Polk CSi3 center channel and six Polk RTi4 bookshelf speakers (all of which you can find at great prices here on Amazon where I ordered them from) and I am very very happy with the results.The Polk speakers like the Onkyo 606 receiver are over achievers for their price point, so they match together extremely well.

The only thing I have left to say is buy it, I wouldn't hesitate recommending this receiver to anyone looking for a solid movie/video game home theater experience.

Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research (including Consumer Reports) and settled on this Onkyo as the best compromise between performance and price.I've had it 2 weeks now and am very happy.

The auto setup function works better than a much-more expensive Denon unit I set up for a friend.I used the microphone (included) to measure speaker levels at 3 different locations in the room and the Onkyo did everything else.(It's connected to some older Polk speakers-- they sound so much better through this amp!)

I bought this primarily to process audio from our new BluRay player and the Onkyo does an outstanding job.The sound is better than in most movie theaters!Especially BluRay DTS or HD Master.Wish more movies were recorded in these formats.

We also have our DirecTV HD DVR hooked up to the Onkyo.Audio and video travel through the HDMI Cables, so there's no need to hook up audio separately.Very nice and a feature you will find missing from some more expensive amps.

The amp does get very warm.I put a small fan in the back of the cabinet and that seems to help.

BTW although this is a 5.1 channel amp is DOES support 7.1 if you want the 2 extra rear speakers... you just have to hook it up to your old amp (or any cheap 2-channel amp) and process those 2 channels that way.The 7.1 decoding IS built into this box.

I am not using the "Zone 2" feature but it's very unusual to have that in a receiver in this price range.You can watch a movie in one room while someone else listens to an iPod or FM in another room.

I don't think you can find a better receiver in this price range (and keep an eye on the price-- it's falling!)

NHT Verve Series Subwoofer (Black, Each) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great little sub-woofer, I am a professional Bassplayer so I love low frequencies.I've got to say that just like NHT says, this speaker rocks'. It produces low end down to, I believe , 40 Hz. This lays down a very smooth bottom.The Verve is also very cool looking with a slim profile. I always thought that to produce good bass you would need a large cabinet, but this soap bar shaped little fella' with funny feet delivers quite a punch. If you're looking to spend $250.00-$300.00 this is your best bet. If it sounds like I love it it's because I do.
And that's all I'm gonna say about that.Capt. Jim

Onkyo TX-SR607 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)My previous receiver was a 9 year old Sherwood. It was a little above a low end unit. It started buzzing and I decided it was time for a replacement. I have 2 nice Wharfdale floor speakers, a nice center, decent rear surrounds and 2 really decent sub woofers.

I read extensive reviews on several brands and decided that I would purchas Onkyo. I went to Fry's looking for the 606 model. They were sold out and just received the 607. I purchased the 607.

I wanted something HDMI based that allowed audio through the HDMI cables. The thing was a snap to set up. Make sure to run an HDMI cable to your TV from the receiver so that you can do on screen programming.

As I said, I have 2 sub woofers and the 607 has two output RCA jacks to enable 2 subs. No more RCA splitters. I fired the thing up and was shocked at the sound quality. The thing sparkles and the lows are clean and deep. I adjusted the individual speaker levels with a Radio Shack db meter on an easy to use Onkyo menu. I did not use the calibration system built into the receiver. A few trips through the menus and you have them mastered. The menu system is REALLY SIMPLE.

Unless you have some REALLY expensive speakers, this is the unit for you. Great sound quality, simple setup and easy menus make this a good choice for the novice or mid range home theater enthusiast.

I highly recommend the unit.

Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2-Channel A/V Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)Unlike a lot of CEs, Onkyo may have indavertantly cannibalized its own model lineup by pushing so much featureset into an entry level receiver that it might deter buyers from their higher end models. I recently did a thorough comparison of the Pioneer VSX-1020 and Denon AVR-791 and the Onkyo nudged out the Pioneer due to its beefier amp section and OSD capabilities. That said, I must caution users that its value is marred by what appears to be a bug with its ability to pass through HDMI video signals unmolested, even in "Through" modes. This bug manifests itself in two ways: 1. 24 bit sources (like cable hdtv) are upconverted to 30 bit when output on a display; AND 2. for some inexplicable reason, 1080p 24fps sources stutter intermittently as if a frame is dropped. The latter might be more noticeable to plasma owners whereas 120hz and 240hz LCDs might compensate for the frame stuttering with their interpolation software (ie the soap opera effect).

With that caveat, the Onkyo is a terrific performer offering strong power (power consumption is up from the 607 to a very grown up 756 watts), terrific flexibility (four speaker terminals can be assigned to wide, height or zone 2). The Denon is limited to merely 7 speaker terminals and the Pioneer has only a pair of assignable terminals. The Audyssey auto-callibration (2EQ) is a notch behind Denon, but the inclusion of Audyssey DSX (for wide arrangements) is a feature that the Denon does not offer. While it lacks the USB terminal for Ipod playback of the Pioneer and the Denon, it does offer a computer input which might resolve the HDMI handshake nightmare many face with htpcs.

Onkyo rather smartly included a fan atop of the receiver, which is silent and all but eliminates the historical Onkyo toaster oven effect.

I really enjoy this receiver, but found the HDMI video molestation issues to quite problematic and what mar an otherwise incredible buy. Hopefully Onkyo can issue a firmware update.

Polk Audio CSi3 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Cherry) Review

The CS245 was a great speaker that was a good match to my old pair of AR15s. However, it didn't provide a perfect match to the RTi4s. The RTi4s and CSi3 now provide a seamless soundstage with clear highs for dialog as well as natural mids and good bass. Two friends have surround systems from Energy, which provide excellent sound quality for movies. However, I prefer my setup for music and am entirely satisfied with my Polks for movies.

Onkyo HT-S7100 7.1 Channel Receiver and Speaker Package Review

(More customer reviews)This is probably one of the best "home theater in a box" setups you'll run across. The receiver is the 606 model which has been very well received by most reviewers. It will accept pretty much any type of input and output it via HDMI so you can cut down on the spaghetti-nest of wires. The speakers are pretty good for this price point. No, it won't put a high-end system to shame, but it will hold its own (and unusually surpass) pretty much anything in this price range.

The sub is better than I expected. Good, solid bass. It's a down-firing setup which is nice if you have pets that like to mess with speakers.

The receiver runs pretty hot, as is typical with Onkyo systems. Make sure there is lots of ventilation (i.e., don't put it into a closed media cabinet).

It also includes stands for the front L/R speakers which is a nice touch, and adds to the overall value. It does not, however, come with a DVD player. But, that's a good thing - you're far better off putting the money into a better quality receiver such as the 606 than getting a system that includes a DVD player with a lesser quality receiver.

The model below this (6100) is very similar. The receiver is virtually the same -- different model number, but the specs are 95% the same. The biggest difference is that the 6100 does not include speaker stands. If there's a big price difference, the 6100 may be a better choice if you don't need stands.

I use this as a home theater/music setup in my basement, and have been very pleased with it. It does not sound as good as the Denon/KEF setup in the LR, but it produces solid quality sound. I have a Wii and a DVD player hooked to it, with the output being a single HDMI cable to a Samsung LCD.

Setup is very straightforward. The most time consuming part is running wires for the back speakers. There are some systems out that have wireless back speakers, but those come with their own set of problems as well (such as interference with wireless routers). Plus, unless you're willing to spend a lot more, wireless speakers in this price range will not perform nearly as well as traditional wired speakers.

Speaking of wires, the only disappointment with this setup was the speaker wires that were included. Very small gauge wire - toss them, and get some decent 16 (or perhaps even 14) gauge wire from monoprice.

If you are looking to keep the cost of a home theater setup to under $800, this system should be on your short list. If you're looking to spend more there are better choices, but this is a great value for the price.

One last thing - the box is heavy!! It comes well-packed, but the total weight is 100+ pounds, so have a hand truck ready!

The center channel features a pair of 4-inch OMF woofers and the same tweeter in a horizontal design, and all 3 surround channels feature a single OMF woofer and tweeter arrangement for a tonally matched 360-degree soundstage.
The system includes everything you need to hook it up: 6 lengths of speaker wire and an RCA line-level subwoofer interconnect. The speakers may be wall- or stand-mounted using optional hardware.

Usually i'll get one as a gift for xmas or something, over the coarse of a year it'll break just in time for someone to get me another cheapie the following xmas. Well, I finally invested a healthy sum of money into a 61 inch DLP televesion, so I figured... what better to go with my new TV then another cheapie surround sound system! (but this time I would buy it). My previous system had a couple busted speakers, so it wasn't worth much. I had limited funds because I spent so much cash on the TV, so I ended up buying this.

I believe people are being too critical about this system. People seem to expect a flagship quality system when they buy a system that costs less then 1/2 as much as a decent receiver alone.

I saw this system at Best Buy for a mere $150.00. Perfect. They had a model on the floor so I gave it a listen, was impressed and decided to buy it. I was happy that it came with an actual receiver rather then a crappy DVD combo type of deal (experience shows me that these always go faulty).

Setup was a snap, much easier then i'm used to thanks to the handy mic that comes with the system that helps your receiver automatically calibrate your speaker settings. I was happy with what I heard at the store, but I was blown away when I heard this in my own home (no sound pollution, like at the store). For a $150.00 system this sounds great! The audio is mostly clean, bass is pulse-pounding, mids and highs are good. So how does it compare to the $6,000.00 high end system my buddy has? Well, obviously not even close.

Here's what you can expect with this system:
The sound is mostly clean. The mids and highs are good, but someone seeking perfection may be a bit disappointed. Don't expect eye-blinking highs and super-rich mids. The bass is surprisingly powerful, but at higher volumes you will get "bass belching". The bass does thump pretty well but this bass module is passive so you wont get those strong soul-shaking bass thumps that you hear in high end systems. Worth mentioning is the form-factor of this system, well the speakers anyways. The speakers are nice and small, making this system discrete. The speakers have a nice feel to them, they don't feel like super cheap speakers. The receiver isn't as attractive because it's quite large and lacks substance because the buttons are very tiny - there's a lot of empty space.

So there are some issues with this system, why did I give it 5 stars? Well, first off, these issues are to be expected. One reviewer said that sony cut corners, I say - duh! Of course if you're going to build a complete 5.1 surround system including a receiver and price it around $150.00 then you're going to cut corners. Anyways, it deserves 5 stars because this is the best cheapie 5.1 system i've ever owned. I went in expecting crud and ended up with something that actually sounds pretty darn good! My movies are very immersive and my music sounds pretty good. That's all I need right now.

ONKYO SKS-HT240 Home Theater Speaker System Review

(More customer reviews)I spent a great deal of time researching a home theater system that fit my requirements. Online reviews were the single largest source of information and the biggest input to my decision. I'm hoping this review will aid someone in the same manner in the future.

First, a few words about my situation - we have a largish (20 X 20 X 25) family room with a 50 inch DLP (a Samsung HL-R5067W) in a corner. The room has large floor-to-ceiling glass windows on the right side, solid walls on two sides, and an open back, which overlooks the kitchen area. In short, a difficult acoustic situation. I needed a system that could fill this large space with sound, yet be crisp enough for dialogues. Plus, this was going to be our main music system as well, so it had to do a good job with music CDs and MP3s, with a large mix of genres and styles.

Since this is the family room (roamed by our curious 2 yr old, with spillover noise from the kitchen etc), we didn't want to spend the world either. The understanding was that we'd budget about $1000 for this system, reserving the future 'media room' for the _really_ good system.

Other requirements were: speakers should be medium sized (not as small as bose, but not large either), preferably in silver.

As mentioned earlier, I looked at many systems online, ranging from HTIB systems (Home Theater in a Box) to separate speakers that ran to hundreds of dollars each. We went to Best Buy, Flanners, American etc to listen to some setups, comparing Denon, Yamaha, Sonys and eventually this Onkyo set.

This Onkyo set has almost a 'perfect' review everyplace you see them online. That's what really made me take notice. And when I actually listened to them at American TV, they beat everything comparable, and then some. So we bought them online (from Vanns.com, actually), and haven't regretted them for a moment.

They do have a couple issues - one, and this is highly subjective, is that I don't care for the stainless steel top, bottom and linings (a little too flashy for our taste). They are a little on the large side, with the subwoofer being pretty big. Also, more importantly, you'll need a few tweaks to get them to play up to their full potential. But that's about it.

As many others have attested before me, the sound from movies will change your movie reviews, and to really top it all, Dave Matthews sounds like he's pretty much sitting in my family room (well, I'm exaggerating, but only a little). The subwoofer is beyond good - it produces a low rumble that's almost visceral.

I paired these speakers with an Onkyo TX-SR574S receiver, and the results are delightful. You will need a good receiver so that you can change the sound levels and distance to different speakers individually. I needed to do that before they started sounding really good. You also will need good, thick speaker cables. Not Monster cable - they are a waste of money - but good (16 gauge at least) speaker wire and a better subwoofer cable than what comes with the set.

The entire set cost me about $700, including $100 for good cables. So we have $300 left over for a HTPC I'm building.

And now for the most important measure of all - my wife, who hates sci-fi movies, sat through 'The Fifth Element' from the beginning to the end, including the credits. This one's a keeper.

(More customer reviews)The Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100 5.1-Channel Speaker System is a good quality, well constructed set.But these speakers may be undersized for many home theaters.I happened upon the Horizon MCS set as I was helping somebody just starting their home theatre.They had already purchased a Yamaha receiver with high power output.Along with the high price, that was my main reason for advising other alternatives.Ultimately, after testing this set out with them they returned it in favor of another.You should do your research to make sure your speakers fit your space and other components.

THE PROS

In terms of durability, the speaker cases are really pretty good. The body style is not one of my favorites, but many will find them attractive and nondescript.The case construction is solid. The connectors and binding posts make nice strong connections.The sound clarity is also nice and responsive.So there are some positives.

PERFORMANCE

While the bass response of this set may be adequate for some, bass-heads will not be satisfied.The overall output is only enough for smaller spaces and starter AV systems.More disappointingto me is the performance of the center channel and satellites.Even if you have a receiver that will allow you to add speakers and grow it to a 7.1 setup, it's easier to scale up when your satellites are adequately sized. These speakers do not have enough amplitude to fill most living rooms.

CONSIDERATIONS

1. The list price of this set is excessive for what you get.BA is a good brand and this is a nice starter set, but this is a premium price.Even at half of list, there are comparable sets.
2. The sound output is crisp and clean but only enough for a smaller living room 150 square feet large or less.If you have a larger room, the output may not be enough.Even in small spaces some may just want more pop.
3. If you already have a receiver, check the specs on it.10 - 100 watts may fit those with basic needs.But be careful not to push more power through these speakers than they can handle.And definitely work them in before pushing them towards the top end of their range.
4.In 5.1 speaker sets, many alternatives offer a better value or better sound.Total beginners and non-audiophiles may get a better value elsewhere.Most beginners can't distinguish good quality from great quality and should save their cash.
6.Decide if you want a 5.1 set-up or plan to grow to 7.1.Also consider if you are setting up a full high-definition home theatre with BluRay or full HD sound.Some of those configurations are based on 7 channels of sound.You can always add-on speakers to this set.But others like the 130 are sized better for adding on.If you mix different satellites the smallest ones become your weakest link.So consider all your options.

THE ALTERNATIVES

Some won't mind paying a premium for the Boston Acoustics brand but you can get a lot more for your money, even from other BA sets.It might make sense to pay a little more if you are getting more.Most people with a high quality receiver probably want and need more output.

The Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS130 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System costs about 20% more but gives you a lot more sound for your money.The center channel and satellites are only slightly larger, but the output is much nicer.It should probably be the baseline for 5.1 systems.

Even as somebody who is not a huge Polk enthusiast, the Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System is a quality set that performs better and tends to sell for about half of this BA set.The construction is about equal but that set has much richer more powerful sound.

The Klipsch Synergy Quintet III Home Theater Speaker System and Harman Kardon HKTS-18 5.1 Channel Speaker System also deserve comparison.Prices fluctuate but each gives you more for your money.As another option, the Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System is a 7 channel set that has more power and a better price point.

An integrated AV speaker system may allow some beginners to save their money for a better surround sound speaker system in the future. Sets like the Harmon Kardon CP40 Home Theater System offer novices better value and an easier install.Once again, most beginners won't notice the nuances of what is given up in quality.

If you're going to spend your money somewhere, get the best receiver you can first.It is better to add on fewer better quality speakers as your budget allows than to buy an entire set of speakers that you may quickly outgrow.

Many people will buy this set based upon BA's brand name and reputation for quality.I would rather spend a little more and get a set that won't be as easily outgrown. If you just want an entry level set, you can get close to this level of performance for less money.If cost is no issue, it may make sense to start with something with more output.That's why even though this is a decent set it is kind of poorly targeted for many buyers' needs.

CONCLUSION

This is a nice set but do not expect to be blown away by the output.Make sure you plan out what space you need to fill and how this set fits with your home theater equipment.But if it does fit your needs and you can get it on sale, then go for it.Just do your research before you pull the trigger.

Update - February 2009: The price of this set has fluctuated a lot due to promotions.It is now selling at list price.At the time I wrote this review it was about 15% less than list price.The price was then discounted several times to less than 50% of list price, making it a much better deal for some people.However, at any price I still feel that making sure you have the right set for your needs is more important than cost.These are far from a *one size fits all* speaker set.Hope this puts things in context.

Onkyo AS140 Speaker Stand (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I have an SKS-HT240 speaker system.Although the product description purports that these stands fit my speakers, they indeed, do not.In addition, be forewarned that despite the claim in the product description, these stands are NOT height adjustable.If you think that you might like these stands for another speaker system, you might wish to contact Onkyo directly to make sure of compatibility, as you obviously cannot rely on the Onkyo provided description.

Finally, one of the two stands came with screw holes that failed to line up by quite a large margin, allowing the use of only one of the two screws to hold the pole to the base.Poor quality control. They actually deserve a '0' rating.Onkyo:(800) 229-1687.
