I recently upgraded speakers to Polk RTi-A3's (front) and smaller Polks on the wall (rear).I was still using an old Audiosource sub, figuring that a sub is a sub, what's the difference?
So, off to Tweeter I went to check subs out.I auditioned the DSWPRO400 and the PSW110.The DSWPRO400 won.Listening to music, it blends really well with the RTi-A3's, is crisp, precise and punchy, (not boomy or muddy like with the old sub). For movies I use the remote to turn it up a bit and it does just what it's supposed to.It's not a house shaker, just great bottom.

These babies are universally hailed as THE surround speaker.I can't disagree.Their ability to envelope you in sound is amazing.Watching a movie that has any 'rain' scenes is a trip. You'll think you're getting wet!

Given that enveloping ability, they are also superb at directional sound if need be.

Simply put, if you're in the market for some new surround speakers. These should be at the top of your list.

This is a great sub.It has a good size enclosure for a 12 inch driver and feels quite solid. No noticeable resonances when you rap on the unit. Can be converted for either down firing or forward firing operation for use in a cabinet as my installation requires.Despite this necessary poor placement it fills my rather large theater room with strong base. The "list price" of $799 on amazon is wrong though.Polks own web site shows it as $679.95 which is the supposedly discounted price on amazon.

Pioneer BDP-330 Pioneer 1080p Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black) Review

Pioneer BDP-330 Pioneer 1080p Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: Netflix was added via firmware on roughly 8/14

The news of Pioneer's departure from the plasma market shook the AV community a little over two years ago. Questions abound as to what the future would hold for Pioneer in a post Kuro world. Fans of their Blu-ray players - begun in earnest with the 51FD/05FD - wondered if a joint venture with Sharp would lead to a dilution of the high quality A/V performance at a very reasonable price point. The release of the budget-priced Pioneer BDP-120 was to some a harbinger of this venture manifesting itself in what appeared to an amateur eye as a largely re-badged Sharp player veiled beneath a Pioneer chassis. Its performance was nowhere near its 320 and 23FD brethren and its price point reflected such.

Emerging news of the 320's replacement came from European sources boasting Youtube streaming, which hinted the promise that US customers might get Netflix streaming or even some of the other instantly streamed video sources. The BDP-330 was largely unannounced until I found one in a Best Buy half-an-hour's drive from my house.

Upon lifting the all-white box, I noticed immediately that it was light, which caused me to prolong any disappointment until I got an opportunity to put it through its paces. I was a bit surprised the box made no mention of Youtube or any streaming services. Upon unboxing the player, I was a bit surprised at how small and shallow its profile really was. It makes the 320 look downright large. The biggest immediate disappointment was the rear output panel, which was identical to the European press photos completely devoid of multichannel analogue outputs. The Burr-Brown DAC-equipped MCH analogue outputs were one of the 320's strongest selling points. The player was made in April of 2010 in China; please note this is a departure from the Malaysian-built 320 and later 51s. The 120 was also made in Sharp and has a number of rear panel similarities including the power cord input's design. The player also shares the exact same model number remote as the 120 - VXX3351, which appears nearly identical to the 320, but including some strangely labeled buttons (page +/- and keylock) missing the video adjust button (this all but eliminated the hope that this might be a "real" Pioneer for me).

Upon firing up the player, I was greeted by the familiar Pioneer menu, but a very different setup menu that was very similar to the 120 best I can remember. Here's where the disappointment turns real: there is no Netflix; only Youtube and RSS. Gone is the slicky black background menu and appeared is the simple text and icon menu I remember from Sharp players. No choice for colorspace or high-speed HDMI...Just resolution. For folks who have been accustomed (spoiled) by the amount of tweaking possible with the 320/23/51/05, this is a huge disappointment.

All video adjustments options of the 320/23 are GONE. No Preset modes like Pioneer PDP or Projector. Once again, just resolution. This player is certainly not of the linneage of the current 320 or 51 with their extensive picture adjustment menus and presets. From this standpoint, the 330 is very disappointing.

In respects of load times, the quick start feature added very little discernable benefit to load times, that were very pokey. In fact, the current 320 was faster in actual load times in all the discs I tested than the 330. Other than the 2 second power off eject time, the Pioneer BDP-330's load times were embarrasingly so for a 2010 player whose peer group can load the same discs in a third of the time.

In testing deinterlacing capabilities with synthetic test suites, the Pioneer BDP-330 did not establish itself as a stand-out by any means. Its performance was very similar tot he BDP-120 in failing to recognize most of the film cadences. In video-based tests, jaggies were prolific and the moire in S&M's speedometer test was the worst I have seen save the Sony BDP-N460, S470, S570, and S370.

Realworld testing was bit more kind to the player. While the upconverted image was not as sharp as the 320, it was compotent on most test material devoid of choppy edits. My biggest complaint is the utter lack of video adjustments for dvd. There are simply no adjustment menus or sub-menus, which is the antithesis of the elaborate and detailed adjustment options available in the current 320.

Deinterlacing Performance using S&M Test Disc:

Test 2:2 2:2:2:4 2:3:2:3 (PF-T) 2:3:2:3 2:3:3:2 3:2:3:2:2 5:5 6:4 8:7:8:7 24p - pass Time-adjusted
Pio 320 pass fail pass pass* marg fail marginal fail marginal pass fail
Pio 120 pass fail pass fail fail fail fail fail fail pass pass
Pio 330 pass fail pass fail fail fail fail fail fail pass fail

Value/Overall:

With sluggish load times, just above average dvd quality, a lack of built in wirless connectivity, youtube and rss streaming only, no multi-channel analogue outputs, no picture adjustments, and non-3D capable, it's hard to argue why this player should cost more than $100 in this market. Even then, it's hard to argue why someone would purchase this player at all unless they are hell-bent on a pioneer fascia and youtube. Firmware and time may bring Netflix and other streaming options, but there are many other players that offer so much more for so much more less. With an MSRP appears to be a very lofty $299, I would encourage folks to explore a combination of two players like an LG BD550 and a Pioneer BDP-320 for nearly the same price and would be a perfect marriage of excellent AV playback of optical media (320) and excellent streaming options (550).All in all, this player is a massive disappointment to followup on the great performance and value the 320 offered.

Polk Audio DSW PRO 500 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) Review

Polk Audio DSW PRO 500 10 inch Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently upgraded to the Polk DSWPro 500. Initially I bought a Polk PSW10 sub to compliment my Monitor 50 floorstanding speakers, which are great but with only dual 5 1/4 woofers, the 50's are lacking in the bass department. The PSW10 was decent, but I was still missing the deep hard hitting bass I had hoped for. The DSWPro 500 took care of that and then some. I'll start with the fit and finish.

This sub is very well built and attractive to look at even though it is all black. The base feet are solid and not cheap like the monitor series speakers or the little nubbins on the PSW10. If you want, you can move the feet to the back side to make it a front firing sub. The speaker is very clean looking and the side port is attractive. In the down firing position, the blue LED light looks very nice and if you don't like the brightness of it, you can turn the light off altogether.

Features and Sound
This sub has very nice features. There are the normal volume and crossover knobs in the back, but what makes this such a cool sub is that it comes with a remote with volume control and equalized settings depending on where in your room the sub is placed. Anything you need done with the sub can be controlled with the remote. As I mentioned before, the LED light looks cool and the fact that you can turn it off is a nice touch.
This sub sounds ridiculous. Some nights I am actually afraid to turn the volume up too loud because this thing shakes the whole house. The bass is tight and clear. When I first bought it, the sound was muddy, but I hadn't set up my receiver crossover settings yet. Don't forget to do that.

I bought this sub for a ridiculously low price of $269... but it was refurbished. Absolutely nothing was wrong with it though. It was like it was brand new. I see that it is selling new for $500, but maybe if you are lucky, you can find it refurbished for the same price I paid. Worth every penny.

I liked the price of course and I was attracted to the LED feature with it's lower power consumption, quiet opperation and long bulb life. The Problem are that this unit is so stripped down in regards to features you wonte be able to use it with very much versatility. I bought one specifically to hook up to a laptop and project the computer image.............Nope. It don't do that. I did hook up an old VCR just to make sure it worked. It does work but not very well. Picture quality is dull and not very vivid at all. There is also an annoying pattern that is visable and reminds me of the dot pattern you see when you look at a magazine photo through a magnifying glass. I desperatly want to brighten up the picture but there is no control for that. All and all I think I can say that I don't think I'll get much use out of this unit. The concept is good but that's about as far as it goes. The picture is simply not clean enough for anyone who is trying to duplicate a television quality image in a larger version........ How do I send this thing back?

Philips-HTS3566D - Home theater system with iPod cradle - 5.1 channel Review

Philips-HTS3566D - Home theater system with iPod cradle - 5.1 channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit to replace my aging Home Theater system and also take advantage of the capabilities of the HD TV I already own.

First, the "Quick Start" guide tells you everything you need to know to set up the entire unit and get it operational. The Quick Start Guide covers both the HTS3565D unit (standard speaker design) and the HTS3566D which has surround sound towers. The English portion of the guide covers a total of four pages. An additional eight are written in Spanish and French.

Packaged in the box are the unit, remote control and two batteries, an RCA jack patch cable for composite video, FM antenna wire, user manual (in addition to the quick start guide), color coded and keyed speaker wires, screws (for the surround towers) and an iPod docking station. An HDMI cable is NOT included. Speakers are comprised of a center speaker (with one mid-range and two tweeters), two front speakers (each with a tweeter and mid-range), two surround speakers (with three mid-range and one tweeter each), and a sub-woofer with one twelve inch driver. This is a total of sixteen drivers.

All of this is contained in a single box that hides the fact that two towers are part of the system. This is accomplished by making the towers a two part unit that has to be assembled outside the box. All of the other components require no more assembly that hooking up the speakers (a very easy task with the color coding) and hookups for connection to the TV/projector, antenna, and iPod dock.

Assembling and placing all of the components is very easy and took no more than a half-hour if that. The Quick Start Guide is amply illustrated and written instruction very understandable and easy to follow. In fact I'll go so far as stating that the actual manual is almost superfluous.

The menu system surpasses my older unit by a considerable margin. As in the best units it is possible to make a myriad of selections from the menu including fine tuning the volume of each individual speaker via pink noise. Note that this fine tuning can only be done when the unit is in DVD operation mode.

Once operational, the unit supports DVD, AM, FM, two AUX inputs, MP3 input, and iPod input. It also has a pair of RCA jacks for Aux sound from the TV. Naturally this greatly enhances the sound quality of your broadcast television viewing.

The sound quality, while watching DVDs (with sixteen speakers I should not have been surprised) that I have yet to be able to watch a movie at half volume without the fear of disturbing my neighbors. The volume scale goes to forty (40), but I typically have to keep level at ten (10) or one quarter of the maximum volume.

With some tweeking I was able to lower the volume of the sub-woofer enough that I can now dial up a volume setting of fifteen (15). This is still remarkably loud.

I have only three complaints.

The first is minor and was temporary. After connecting the HDMI cable it took a while (maybe fifteen minutes maximum) for the unit to get both the sound and picture in synchronization. In other words I did not have sound for that period of time while the unit made some internal adjustments. This IS covered in the manual (thankfully as I thought I'd bought another defective product) and have not had a problem with it since. Note that the HDMI Audio in the menu system must be OFF to play DVDs through the player's speaker system.HDMI Audio ON is for component home theater receivers separate from the player.

Second, the surround sound speaker wire could be a few feet longer. This cannot be fixed by patching a few extra feet of wire yourself as the wire is already terminated with keyed, color coded connectors.

My third complaint is that the unit did not come with an HDMI cable. With a take home price of nearly $300.00 I would expect Philips to be able to afford throwing in a forty dollar, six foot cable. Naturally, the best picture quality dictates the purchase of this cable. That said the up-conversion is very good and seamless.

Finally, the picture quality is quite good, the sound amazing (the first war film I watched nearly blew me off the couch), and the reliably what I've come to expect from Philips. After having bought a competitor unit that did not work new out of the box, I was a bit apprehensive about this purchase. But after a month of use I am very happy with it. The external design in clean and complementary to most home decor. The picture and sound quality excellent and now I no longer anticipate buying a Blu-Ray unit at twice the price along with the associated high cost of Blu-Ray discs.

I feel I've made a good purchase.

Panasonic SC-BT100 5.1 Blu-Ray Home Theater System (Black) Review

Panasonic SC-BT100 5.1 Blu-Ray Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NOTE: I HAVE ADDED ADDENDUMS TO THIS REVIEW, MAKE SURE AND READ THE COMMENTS
A search of the internet will quickly reveal many in the audiophile community bashing "home theater in a box" (htib) systems like this, and many of their entirely valid criticisms of such systems apply to this unit, but it has a lot of redeeming qualities too that make me overall convinced that this is a good buy for anyone whose needs match what it provides. Also it is a pretty high end htib so the sound quality will exceed what many would expect.A quick word on settings: This unit comes with a number of effects such as surround enhancement and some pre set EQ settings.Don't use them.Maybe turn down the sub a bit and turn up the center channel, but your goal with movies is to ACCURATELY reproduce the sound as it was intended to be heard.Keep everything flat and you will hear how the movie was meant to sound. That's how I know this is a quality htib: It sounds good with everything flat)

This is a good system for what it is, namely a way to get both blu-ray and 5.1 surround in one convenient and affordable package. The rear speakers are wireless, as in there is a second amp that connects wirelessly to the main amp so you don't have to run cables from the front to back of the room although you do have to run cables from the second amp to the rear speakers. The rears are very light and thus easy to mount on the wall, and I don't worry about that lack of weight too much because surrounds really don't need much power as they just add effects. The fronts and center are much beefier and are two-ways with what appears to be real crossovers so that's pretty good for a home theater in a box.The subwoofer is (unfortunately) passive but its driver is bamboo so I don't think it has the paper-driver problems of other htibs. It seems to cross over at a decent point as the bass stays properly nondirectional. All in all, in my fairly small room it sounds really great for me, and it's pretty cool how it has all the latest surround decoders including Dolby trueHD and DTS HD.

All that said, this system definitely has some typical htib limitations: It has proprietary speaker connections so you can't use other wire without splicing. You can, however, use other speakers because the speakers themselves use standard connections (only the amp-end connection is proprietary). You can also expand to 7.1 sound either by another proprietary (and wireless) panasonic amp or the unit actually does have wired surround outputs so that you can plug in other amps and speakers for the front and back surrounds. However, the proprietary wire is permanently implanted in the subwoofer and naturally there's no way to get a nonamplified subwoofer signal out of this amp so even with some wire splicing ability I doubt you could add a powered sub.So you could upgrade the speakers but not the sub.But again all the included stuff sounds very good so I don't regard this as a dealbreaker.

In addition to a passive, nonupgradeable subwoofer and the inability to use your own speaker wire (although you can use your own speakers), the unit is VERY skimpy on inputs. No HDMI passthru, and only ONE toslink/SPDIF in, and one conventional component audio in.This means that, unless you get a switch or are willing to swap out, you can only use one source other than blu-ray with which there will be "true" surround sound. This is a problem for me because my TV does not allow the SPDIF out to output any audio except for the ATSC tuner (copyright issue) and I have both a cable set top box and an xbox 360 that I want to get surround sound from.Remember, if you plug standard RCA stereo plugs into this thing you will not get real surround, just pro logic type matrix encoded stuff.

All in all, this is still a good buy. These days you can get a 42 inch lcd 1080p tv for about $1000, and you can get this system for about $1000, and you'll have a complete home theater with display, sound, and blu ray player (which is a good final standard profile player which will support all special features except bd live), all for about $2000 and no hassles. As usual with htib, you will sacrifice upgradeability and connectivity for this convenience, and you will have a passive subwoofer. But trust me, this sounds very good for htib and at this pricepoint I recommend it highly for anyone who wants the modern high def home theater experience on a limited budget, because on that, it delivers. You will really enjoy watching movies on this thing and in the end, that's all that really matters.

Marantz NR1501 Slim Line Home Theater Receiver Review

Marantz NR1501 Slim Line Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Marantz NR1501 slim line model is only about 4" tall and really an excellent overall receiver.I bought this to replace a Sony STRG810.It was a toss up between a Denon, Yamaha or Marantz. The Sony STRG810 was a great receiver for movies but it was lacking sound quality in the music department (too much reverb). When comparing similar models, Yamaha was brighter then Denon, and Marantz was warmer then Denon, so I went with Marantz.I compared the Marantz NR1501 model to a Marantz SR6004 ($1300) side by side, and the audio quality was almost the same except the SR6004 was a bit more full at 110 watts per channel.I also compared the Marantz NR1501 to a Harmon Kardon AVR254 and the Marantz NR1501 sounded much better. The Harmon Kardon sounded too digital and tinny where the Marantz sounded true to its source. I am very pleased with how warm and clear the sound quality is while listening to music or watching movies.

The 50 watt NR1501 is more then enough wattage to power my reference series Klipsch speakers in a 13' x 17' living room. You may think that 50 watts is too low, but Marantz rates their receivers lower then what they are capable of.For example, Sony rates their receivers by putting a meter in the center of a testing room and increasing the volume as loud as it can go - distortion and all; they mark down what the wattage output is.Marantz does the same procedure except once they get to distortion, they back the knob off a little and mark down the wattage rating. That is why you will notice a lot of Marantz receivers are rated at 50,70, or 90 watts which is a lot lower then some of the 100,110 watt competition.

I usually set all the parameters (crossover frequency, speaker distance, db level etc.) by ear as I have with every receiver I have purchased. I wanted to see how well this receiver does with auto calibration, so I ran it.The receiver comes with a microphone so I put it on a camera tripod, put it up to the listening position, and ran the auto cal procedure. It lasted about 3 minutes and played a series of test tones. When it was done, all of the levels were adjusted to the listening position.I manually went through these levels to see how well it did.The only one I had to adjust was the crossover frequency. It set my center channel frequency to 170hz and my front and surround speaker channels to 90hz.Let me break this down, so you can see why I changed it:

My center channel speaker's frequency response is 67Hz-23kHz ± 3dB.Meaning anything below 67Hz ± 3dB is not produced well from the center channel speaker; so I set the center channel crossover frequency to 70Hz.Therefore, everything below 70Hz will be sent to my subwoofer. Also, my front channel speaker's frequency response is 90Hz-20kHz ± 3dB, so I set my front channel crossover frequency to 100hz.Finally, my rear channel speaker's frequency response is 52Hz-23kHz ± 3dB so I set the crossover frequency to 60hz.There was a noticeable improvement in sound quality after this was adjusted properly.

Onkyo HT-S9100THX 7.1 Channel Receiver and Speaker Package Review

Onkyo HT-S9100THX 7.1 Channel Receiver and Speaker Package
Average Reviews:

This is an AWESOME product. I've been using it for about 2 weeks now, and in my opinion it's one of the best HTs I've ever heard. It's much betten than the overrated BOSE systems, and 7.1 THX beats any movie theater.

The con is that speakers are freakishly bulky (specially if you compare to a Bose). You might have some hard time finding a stand that will remain standing with one of those, so it's a good bet to go with the ones from Onkyo itself.

Universal remote works pretty well, although it could be better looking (go with the Philips Prestigo series for a nicer look and good funcionality).

All and all, if you want a top-notch HT in a box system, you cannot go wrong with this. Plenty of digital inputs (both HDMI and Optical, unlike the previous 990 version).

If you are an audiophile don't bother. You are never happy with the sound. If you are an average user this will sound great.I installed them in a room that measures 30' x 15' and it will fill the room with plenty of sound while still sounding great. These are being powered by an Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black). These are not large speakers so don't expect them to shake the room. They can be mounted by a single bolt on the back that worked with the universal mounting kit that I got.

Product Description:
The missing piece to your home theater puzzle is this 7.1-channel speaker package from Onkyo. The perfect addition to your DVD player and home theater receiver, the SKS-HT750 provides all the speakers you need to enter the all-enveloping world of surround sound. 110W output, 2-way acoustic-suspension front, center and surround speakers provide the soundstage. The earth-shaking 230W powered subwoofer provides the impact. All together provide an astounding, precise and pleasurable cinema experience in your home. All 6 surround and 1 center channel speakers are 2-way acoustic suspension and have one 3-1/8" and one 1" driver. They are designed for use with home-theater amps/receivers that deliver 110 Watts per channel RMS. Their rated frequency response is 60 Hz to 50,000Hz. The subwoofer is independently powered with an integrated 230 watt amplifier. It has a 10" driver that delivers a frequency response of 25Hz to 150Hz. When considering a home-theater speaker system, it is crucial that all the speakers of your surround system are perfectly matched. It helps eliminate any colorization that might occur in sound delivery. It also permits accurate reproduction throughout the sonic range. All things considered, this Onkyo SKS-HT750B 7.1 channel speaker system is a great companion to your home-theater receiver, your new HDTV, and your video players. They are an integral part of your home-theater system, and a reasonable investment too.
