(More customer reviews)I own a new 40" Sony Bravia LCD that I hooked this system up to. I was very impressed with its sound and its wide range of features for the price! However, there were a couple areas that I feel need to be addressed.

PROS:
- Excellent sound, especially the Movie DCS mode which adds a ton of depth to any movie
- Easy setup
- Excellent integration with a Sony TV. I can fully control my LCD from the receiver remote after hooking up the HDMI cables.
- Full HDMI switching makes initial connection and switching between sources a snap. I can switch between cable and my PS3 with 1 button.
- Wide range of format handling, including Linear PCM.
- Wide range of sound modes.
- No color distortion issues when switching between HDMI sources. This seemed to be a problem in older models.

CONS:
- I found the bass to be a little lacking due to the fact that the subwoofer is passive. I swapped the included one out with this: Yamaha YST-SW216BL Advanced YST II Front-Firing Active Subwoofer and it brought the sound to a whole new level!
- Uses proprietary speaker wire connections. Sony makes it very hard to swap the subwoofer like I described previously because the receiver uses proprietary plugs for the speakers instead of generic speaker wire attachments. The system comes with 4 thin speaker wires with plugs to the receiver on one end, and bare wire on the other to hook up to the satellite speakers. However, the subwoofer's is HARD WIRED, so it can't be detached at all. What's worse is that Sony only sells their speaker wires in packs of 5, for a whopping $55.
To use my new subwoofer, I simply found an aftermarket plug with a small length of wire on eBay, spliced it with some standard 18 gauge wire of my own and hooked it up to my new sub. Voila, it worked like a charm.

OVERALL:
Out of the box, the system is a solid 4/5. With a powered subwoofer and a little bit of handiwork to get around Sony's greed, it can be improved to 5/5.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product but am not using it for any kind of video display so I can't speak to it for that. I'm using it as a sound system for my ipod and computer and it hasn't let me down. The sound really packs a punch and is really nice if you use the right equalizer to get the proper balance in sound. The only drawback is that it doesn't put out any sound when using these functions through the center speaker so really its just like having a 4.1 system unless you use it as a surround system for a tv. It goes pretty loud considering i haven't really gone above 22 volume even though it goes up to 34. The balance is really good, although I tend to like a little more bass in my music, which it offers plenty of. Great system that isn't too pricey. Would recommend to anyone who wants an easy way to get out of having to use a 2.1 system on a laptop.

They are great!No complaints here.I was upgrading from my original aiwa speakers (made by sony) in my home entertainment system.The difference is amazing.Highs mids and lows are all great.I always recommend a powered sub woofer, I do have one. However, if you get these speakers you can get by without one.

My listening interests are varied.I have listened to Kiss, ELO, The Hollies, Peter Frampton, Supertramp and some classical on these speakers so far.I have also viewed a couple movies using them.All sounded great."Do You, (Feel Like I Do) sounded GREAT!All the ELO was crisp, clean and clear. The only "booming," as mentioned in the other review, that I heard was while listening to "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" by the Hollies.However, it did appear to be a bass sound that was appropriate with the song, not anything abnormal.But then again, it may just be different taste.

Oh, and the picture shows the speaker as looking more of a grey than black.They are black, not the grey like the picture shows.that is good since my tv and all my entertaiment system units are all black.

My advice is you cannot go wrong with these.If anything changes I will update.

Pyle Home PDSUB10A 10-Inch 400-Watt Front-Firing Powered Subwoofer Review

(More customer reviews)For my very 1st powered Subwoofer, I thought this would be the perfect answer to my needs for a powerful, mid-sized Woofer with full features & a very affordable price. WRONG!!! After researching this product online, I went ahead & ordered one from an online "Warehouse" whose name I won't mention.
Being an Audiophile, professional Musician & recording Engineer, I hooked the unit correctly to my stereo system, turned the power on & boy, what a surprise. It immediately started smoking & blew a fuse. I also noticed a very obvious crack on one side of the port on the front of the unit, as well as a dent on one corner in the back of the cabinet.
I called the company who very courteously & promptly sent me an exact replacement while picking up the defective one (the 1st one)& sending it back. Eagerly, I hooked the replacement PDSUB10A to my stereo. This one didn't smoke & stayed on without blowing a fuse, however I was extremely disappointed to find the internal powered amplifier completely blown, with distorted sound no matter where you set the gain- from Lowest to Midway. I even ran a line-level tester directly into the line-ins on the unit to isolate the problem apart from my perfectly-working Stereo system, and sure enough, the distortion was in the internal amp itself & not from my Stereo. Like the 1st unit, I also noticed the exact same type of crack on the port on the front, as well as some very obvious scratches & blemishes on the face when you put it to the light.
It was after these two horrible experiences in a row with the same model, I came to the conclusion (or the assumption) that this company deals in Blems & 2nds (in spite of their online claims to the contrary)& that is probably why they can sell these brands at the very lowest prices online. All I wanted was a decent, inexpensive powered subwoofer (that actually worked) to enhance my already excellent sounding Stereo system- is that too much to ask for ?
After getting a very frustrating degree of "Runaround" from 4 different employees (one being the "manager"), I finally was able to return this 2nd unit with a full refund credited back to my card-thank God. As a result of all this, I will never do business with this company again, and I advise the rest of you to "Steer-Clear" as well !!!
As for Pyle, I now see why they have that name, as they sure live up to it, in my opinion--- "PYLE of C_ _ P"!!! [...]Just read all the reviews (as compared to only one other equally negative review online on the Pyle other than mine here)& you'll be sold like myself. Actually, I went ahead & ordered the Dayton SUB-120 (12"/150W) for $154 as an overkill while I was at it & it is on its way to me. Hope this helps-will make a review on this new unit soon.

No screaming highs and no thunderous bass, but that's not what this speaker is for. The frequency response is good, though, and overall this is a very nice speaker. Well-constructed and heavy. This speaker matches all the other Sony speakers in my system. I hope this review helps you.

(More customer reviews)Forget all other audio companies. Sony will always have the highest quality products for the best prices. 3 foot high towers for $50 each??? They must be pretty mediocre right? Wrong. These speakers are wonderful.

They have a full, bright sound and can get as loud as you possibly want (and louder) if you have a decent receiver. There is a great distinction between the tweeter, mid and sub. These are the best speakers I have ever owned.

The only thing wrong with them is if you love extreme, rumbling bass, they might not meet your standards. But a good active sub woofer is a must for any good sound system anyway.

KLH AT2100i 400 Watt Amplified Television Home Audio System Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up this packagefor $180. It is an excellent sounding system. I am very impressed. It compliements my Sony 32 inch Wega Trinitron TV. The picture on my TV is great but the sound is lacking. What is great about this system is that it is self-amplified, meaning no need to connect to a reciever.

Please ignore the 400 watt rating

The rating that counts is the RMS rating. RMS watt is the continous loudness. The subwoofer's RMS is 65 watts and the left and right speakers are 35 watt.

Setup:
Basically the setup is Plug and Play. Take the RCA cable and connect between the TV and subwoofer. Connect the speaker wire from the subwoofer to the speakers and basically your set.

PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT use the enclosed speaker wire. If you do you'll be sorry. Go out and pick up a small roll of 16 guage wire! Bite the bullet pay the $$.You will not be sorry. Using the enclosed speaker wire KLH provided, the sound become distorted at mid-to-high volume. With the 16 guage wire, the sound was much fuller and no distortion.The package also include:
1) A docking station for your ipod. You take your ipod and stick it in the provided doc station. Then run the enclosed ipod cable from the doc station to a special ipod input on the back of the woofer. I don't have and ipod so I can review that feature.

2) Includes a a bunch of other cables you might need, a Y splitter cable to, etc

3) Speaker stands and wall mounts. I didn't mount the speakers but I used the stands. The speakers stands are heavy (Which is good) and very well built. They are a snap to setup.

4) A remote control to control the loudness of the speakers and subwoofer.

Performace:
My TV sounds a hell of a lot better. My living room measure 19 by 20 feet. The sound is awesome. The subwoofer fills the room with bass (you can adjust the volume). The left and right speakers have a dome tweeter so dialouge sounds crisp. Movies and TV shows just seem to more engaging.

Aside from movies and TV, you can hook up your laptop, mp3 player, or compact disc player to the headphone jack input on the subwoofer.

Conclusion:
As long as you DON'T use the enclosed speaker wire and use 16 guage wire, you will be happy. This is an excellent 2.1 channel system for those of you who don't need a full blown home theatre but would like better sound that your TV cannot produce.
Overall, this package includes everything you need, for a great price.

(More customer reviews)I bought the STRDE825 Sony receiver in 2000 and still haven't figured out all of the unecessarily complicated scenarios! The unit sounds OK but lacks bass punch. If you like your music in flat response, this unit will suffice. Even with full bass and treble attenuation, EQ and bass boost, it still sound flat. The remote is even more of an operational headache than the receiver. When you press certain features, the remote and receiver exchange data and you may wind up with a deleted feature. The myriad of sound fields are useless to the average listener and could be replaced by simple treb, mid, and bass controls.

Sony SAWM40 Home Theater Subwoofer Review

(More customer reviews)To begin with, I got this unit or a steal...$140 brand new at an electronics store down on canal street here in NYC. I bought it to replace the small, 50-watt KLH BB-II that I had originally got because of space restrictions in my apartment. Since I got rid of the floor-standingair conditioner in the corner, I now had space for a decent 100+ watt sub, so I went looking around. I am using this sub as part of a Dolby Digital/DTS system (Sony 100-watt-per-ch reciever), with two celestion DL-6 fronts, a Polk CS 245 center, and two JBL Control 1's as rears...all of which provide excelent bass response down to around 60-75 Hz. So why did I go for such an ample sub? Why not?
To begin with, this unit is quite compact for what it contains. A 120-watt amp with a response of 20-200Hz paired with a 12" front-firing speaker....other units of similar specs would probably be the size of one of those smaller refridgerators you had in your college dorm room. This unit tucks away rather nicely even in a small apartment, given that you make some corner space for it. Many down-firing or front-firing units this size house an 8" driver, or a 10" at best.
Controls/Inputs: Power push/push button on front. The top controls are the volume, phase reverse slide'switch, and crossover freq (50-170Hz), and the bacl of the unit houses the auto-shutoff switch, +/- stereo speaker inputs and outputs, and a single RCA jack for mono/sub in along with a single RCA send for attaching an additional unit. Kudos on the single-jack approach, as I always drove myself crazy whether or not I was doing the right thing by adding a Y splitter to the receiver's sub-out jack. Simple...one quality RCA connector cable from the receiver's sub-out to the sub's in.
Sound: This can get very subjective, as you know. To begin with, the 12" driver of this unit would undoubtedly fill the room of a bigger space than mine (17'x12') without the help of the other full-range speakers I mentioned before. But the thing that irks me a bit is that while you'll get rumble and bowel-disturbing low frequencies for days, you might bit get the same punch and percussive quality from a front-ported design, and maybe even a smaller speaker. Smaller speakers move faster than larger ones, whereas larger ones sound deeper. I think that if this was a bottom firing design with a front-firing port, you'd get more of that trasnsient punch. I like how this unit really fills the room (T-Rex footsteps from "Jurassic Park"), but I'd like some more punch (20mm guns from "Saving Private Ryan", DTS, basically a reference benchmark for any 5.1 system). I tried hooking up my older, 6.5" ported KLH, but it is out of phase with the normal setting of the Sony, which is, incidentally, the correct phase for its (Sony's) placement in my system. The little KLH has good punch, but no phase-switcher. Room placement will also be CRITICAL, because of phasing and standing waves.I first put the sony on the side wall and heard very little, on either phase setting.I then put it in a corner, and the paint started to chip off the walls from the rumble.
Technical notes: Even though there is a useful crossover freq. control, when using this unit hooked up to the sub-out of a 5.1 digital receiver, it's best to turn it all the way up to 170Hz, except when listening to CD's, in which case 80-100Hz is probably better. Most, if not all. 5.1 DD receivers with dedicated sub-out only put out the frequencies that the DVD's mix sees fit to, so you don't want to possibly cut that range down by turning the crossover freq. down on the sub. Hooking up to a receiver's speaker out's is a different story, as your passing a full-range signal through. If used with a 5.1 receiver's sub-out, simply turn the crossover all the way up and forget about it. Volume setting ranges rather widely between music and even different movies, as DVD mixes are all over the place.
Altogether, a great value for the money, buy not quite as clean and punchy as I would like. At $140, it'll do for a while until I move into a bigger place (and a bigger income brackett!). At 120 watts, you'll have plenty of power, and although my Sony receiver is up to the task, I'm sure I'd do better with a comparable Yamaha, again for later times. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go for a 10" driver in a down-firing front-ported enclosure, probably more appropriate for my listening space, but this will do the job and I just don't have time to keep looking.

Sony DAV-FX900W 5-Disc DVD Dream System (5.1 Channel) Review

(More customer reviews)I had just purchased the Samsung HL-S4666W 46" DLP HDTV and I felt I needed a surround sound system to go with it.However, I didn' have thousands to spend, and I needed to get a progressive scan DVD player too.This system answered all my problems at once.

The set-up took about 1-2 hours (mostly just putting the speaker stands together, which are made of metal not cheap plastic).It was probably just as long to actually figure out how everything works.The manual has everything in it; however, it isn't in any logical order.

PROS:
-over 1000W of power
-"wireless" rear speakers w/separate amp (If you step in the way the connection is broken, but it goes back on within a second of walking out of the way)
-HDMI output & optical audio input (plus component, RCA, etc, etc)
-Auto-Calibration mic (I thought it worked pretty accurately, it tells you the distances that it thinks the speakers are from the mic, and they were dead-on in my case)

CONS:
-DVD turntable EXTREMELY slow (I was aware of this before I bought it, and I think most people can deal with it)
-DVD insertion is sort of sketchy (It doesn't tell you when to push the DVD into the slot, you just have to hold it there and hope it sucks it in.I find the easiest way is to "eject" the empty slot and then push the disc in right after the word "eject" comes off the lcd, I've looked all over the manual and haven't found a clear explanation of what I'm doing wrong)
-DVD FF/RW only has 2 speeds (really stupid)

Overall I love this system.I hooked up my PS2 with RCA audio to the receiver and started playing "Guitar Hero", and the sound was great.I've also thoroughly enjoyed watching concerts I have on DVD (Audioslave, Offspring, The Police, Depeche Mode, etc.).They all sound excellent.I have a DirecTV receiver, with the optical connection.It's great watching sporting events and such with this system.

I'm not a professional speaker guy by any means, but for what I use this system for, it sounds great.The DVD player is excellent barring its minor setbacks.On my TV the movies look great through the HDMI cable.

All in all, great starter system with everything included.

EDIT: Now that I've had this thing for a few months, I have a bit more to add.I think there should have been more inputs included with this item.I have a DirecTV box, a PS2, and a record player, and I can't hook up all 3 at the same time.There are a plethora of input types on the back, which is really nice so you can practically hook anything up, but only two things at the same time.Other than that its a great system.It has plenty of power, and I love cranking it up and listening whether it is NFL football or music CDs.

(More customer reviews)This is one slick little soundbar/subwoofer combination.A significant improvement over the previous offering, the CT100.The sound bar is bigger than that model and feels like it is better constructed.The subwoofer is a solid piece of work as well.

Now for the important part, sound quality.The sound quality is much better than the old model and I would say it approaches the quality of the more expensive Yamaha YSP sound bars.You will probably have to do a little tweaking with it to get it set up properly but once you do this baby will shine.Sound is strong from both the soundbar and the subwoofer.The subwoofer is where your connections are located.You can run your dvd/blu ray player and your cable box (among others) to the sub and then the sub will run an HDMI cable to the tv.You can pretty much plug anything into the back of the sub as there are three HDMI inputs, two component inputs and a composite input along with the normal cable tv coax.

One thing to keep in mind.This will not surpass the surround quality of a good quality seperate sound system with multiple speakers.But then again most buyers should know that from the start.This is an option for people who don't want speakers all over the place or who have space issues which make a soundbar solution the best option.I rated this item 5 stars in comparison to other soundbar solutions, not compared to a surround system with multiple speakers.While there are some better sounding soundbars they are at least twice as much if not more expensive.For the quality and price this is an excellent soundbar option.

(More customer reviews)I bought these used speakers and i thought i had got a fair deal on them.
But as is the case with used items, their quality varies..
These particular ones are just as what they look to be. No extra accessories if you thought they were included.
it's just those two box speakers. Plus for sound input you have to use two wires for each speaker. So know what you are getiing beforehand. Am trying to return them b'se i wanted plug and play. I have two spend more time looking for connectors now.!!

(More customer reviews)Don't let the size of these speakers throw you, they pack a pretty good punch for their small size and are an ideal compliment to larger front [main] speakers in a four speaker setup.I use them as rear speakers in a 4 speaker A/V setup and they are not at all intimidated by my larger 12 inch woofer main speakers. They provide the necessary mid-higher end and throw some good bass too.They match perfectly with my all-onkyo system and do loud pretty well.I recommend them for anyone who would like a good quality well built but affordable speaker for rear or surround use. My speakers shipped out of Discount Jungle via FED EX & they arrived quickly & in good working order right out of the box.Go Get Em' you won't be disappointed.

Fluance AV-SC Home Cinema Acoustic Center Channel Speaker Review

(More customer reviews)I've had this center speaker for about a year now and am very happy with it. I guess it comes with aging and possibly too much cranked Zeppelin in my youth...but I'm having a harder time picking out dialogue sometimes, and the crispness of this center speaker certainly helps.

As mentioned in the manual, I did notice a change after the "break-in period," where voices eventually became more normal sounding and not over-crisp and amplified.

I'd got online today to look into getting the matching bookshelf speakers too, but at this time Fluance is apparently slammed with orders, backordered and out of stock.

I think this attests to a reputation they're getting for quality speakers at reasonable prices.

Sony SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers with 8" Woofer (Pair) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm in the unfortunate position of having audiophile ears but a small budget. So I shop carefully for audio equipment. I purchased a pair of Sony B3000s here recently ($84), and while I auditioned them I was also testing a pair of Klipsch B-3 bookshelf speakers ($329). I only use my system for audio, by the way, in combination with a 100w Sony subwoofer, and I listen mostly to classical music.

I noticed a big difference in sound right away- the Sonys seemed to be accurate up and down the frequency range while producing a very even, smooth ensemble sound in full orchestral passages. To my ears the Klipsches did none of these things well. I'm an orchestral musician and I know what different instruments sound like- the Sonys reproduce all the instruments very accurately. The Klipsches, on the other hand, were so bright and lively that I found them harsh and difficult to listen to. They're more efficient, so they produce louder sounds at the same volume setting, but that's not a consideration for me. All that I want is accurate reproduction.

I compared both pairs side-by-side with a wide range of recordings, for about 50 to 60 hours each, and ultimately, for my tastes, the Sonys far outperformed the Klipsches. And at 1/3 the price of the Klipsches they were a heck of a bargain. They're not high-end speakers so they're not going to blow your doors off, but for the money they're a great value.
