(More customer reviews)Anybody who wants kick ass bass in their stereo system has to have a subwoofer. In a home cinema system the amount of bass slam is more important than bass sounding like music. The choice is between having an earthquake in your living room versus a double bass sounding like a double bass. The Jamo Sub 300 falls on the musical side.
The Jamo Sub 300 has a 10 inch downward firing woofer, driven by a 300 watt amplifier with a limiter which protects the amplifier and the woofer. There is an automatic on and automatic off switch which senses the presence or absence of a signal. I match the Jamo subwoofer with the Jamo C607 full range speakers that go down to 32 hz. The subwoofer goes down to 28 hz. The Jamo C607 stereo pair has generous bass, but sounds lean when compared to the addition of the subwoofer. A good subwoofer adds weight and solidity to the bottom end, not a boom that gives you a headache.
The Jamo bass sound is slightly warm and very expansive rather than tight and hard. Although good with all types of music, the Jamo bass works best with classical music. A showpiece for bass is Leonard Bernstein conducting Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. The vigour and excitement comes through.
Setting up any subwoofer is time consuming and if you are not methodical in trying different settings and moving the subwoofer, you should get help from a knowledgeable friend or have the retail dealer set it up for you. You will know what you are up against when you read Tom Nousaine's "Subwoofer Setup Secrets" on the internet. I put a ceramic tile slab under my subwoofer which cuts down unwanted bass resonances.
There are better subwoofers than the Jamo for home theatre applications (bang and crash sounds), but for music the Jamo will compete against anybody in its price range.
