(More customer reviews)I will preface this review with: I consider myself to be close to an audiophile, but not completely. I research not only using the 3 subscriptions to home theater magazines, but also using the internet, so I would consider myself "well-informed" on any tests conducted on home theater components. I have auditioned and owned many types and brands of loudspeakers(I LOVE wharfedales), have multiple entertainment setups in the house, and own a dedicated home theater which houses all my high-end equiptment.
This is a huge speaker out of the box, so make sure you have the room for it or buy a stand to put it on(Didn't fit under the TV stand easily without removing shelves). DO NOT get this model if your listening space is less than 400 square feet, consider the 4c and 5c. It is currently positioned about 1 foot in front of my 61" screen on a speaker stand with the Voiceright switch on the back set to stand. I couldn't tell too much of a difference with the switch being in either position. Just a slight change in how wide the sound stage is (but it's so wide the switch barely mattered in my room), but yet clear and able to pan sound clearly not only within the center itself, but also across left tower to center to right tower. Thje 3-way speaker has 2 6.5" woofers, 1 3" mid, and 1 1" tweeter with a listed freuency response listed as 60-20,000 Hz at +/-3db or 53-22,000 Hz at +/-6db. I put the cutoff at 80 Hz in the Onkyo receiver recommended not only by Aperion, but also for the THX Ultra 2 setup in the room.
With that said, my dedicated home theater room measures 22' wide by 24' deep mostly a rectangle. There is a C shaped custom sofa in the 12-16 foot listening area smack in the middle of the room that holds 5-7 people. Other components are Samsung 61" Led backlit DLP TV, Wharfedale diamond 8 series 7.1 surround system, Onkyo SR805 receiver (THX Ultra 2 certified 7.1 130w/channel), PS3 250gb slim for games and Bluray, still have a high end HD DVD player, Comcast HD cable service, Monster power protection and filtration and a Gateway FX gaming computer hooked up together.
This speaker blows everything I've ever listened to and ever owned completely out of the water!! I will be purchasing the 6t towers immediately to match the center soundstage a bit better.
There will be no one that you know who will have a better sounding center channel speaker than you if you consider this for your home theater unless they've spent over $5000 per speaker. For a sub-$1000 center, you cannot buy any better. Plain and simple.
I was a skeptic about any new audio equiptment (whenever I go to an electronics store, I cringe at how crappy Polk, Sony, and Klipsch sound that people think are amazing).
I did have to hear this speaker for myself before I would believe all the awards and outstanding reviews that Aperion audio has received in the last year. Check out their website for more information. If you are as skeptical as I am, they do let you try the speakers for 30 days in which you can send them back if you are not impressed with them. While I did not take advantage of this program (buying the center channel was my own test first before comitting to the whole system), it is at least a nice option for anyone looking to see what they have to offer without taking the risk of spending a few thousand on a mediocre speaker setup. You will be impressed!!
Again, this is a huge speaker with a huge soundstage, make sure you have the room for it...I don't see how anyone couldn't be happy with this product. 10 out of 10 on my scale. Now I just have to complete the system with Aperion components.
