Wow It's SMALL!!! Only 3" X 3.3" X 4" w/o the grille. It has a 2.4" aluminum woofer (a ~2" piston) with a roll surround and a 0.63" titanium tweeter. It can handle 100 watts maximum and is rather low in sensitivity at about 87 db.The advertised frequency response is 110 Hz to 20,000 Hz but the low resonance point is 114 Hz so one would expect little useful output below 114 Hz. I suggest a crossover frequency to a sub at 120 to 150 Hz. It has what Mirage calls an Omnipolar design; where the woofer and the tweeter each fire almost straight up onto an acoustic lens that disperses the sound through ~360 degrees. Mirage claims the only 30% of the sound will be direct, with 70% of the sound energy reflecting from the walls, etc. While this gives the speaker a larger acoustic size, is reduces imaging ability making this speaker best suited for surround applications. It should be mounted "upside-down" if it is mounted above 6 feet off the floor to direct the tweeter output down toward the listener.
Listening impressions: The Mirage MX is a very articulate speaker with a good mid-range and mid-highs but not much impact (It has a very small radiating area of only ~ 3 sqin compared to the ~16 sqin area of common mid-woofers). However it does not sound thin or boxy like many small speakers. It seems to have no strong upper mid-range resonances to spoil the response. The grille can be easily removed (held in place with magnets). The grille attenuates the high frequency significantly. My older ears liked the sound better with the grille removed when listening at low to moderate levels. The sound was more open - but it may sound too bright to younger ears without the grille. When the volume was increased the sound stays uncongested but gets even brighter, so installing the grille gives a better balance to the sound.
Plucked strings sounded especially nice. Vocals are quite good. Solo piano is disappointing in the lower range. The sound sounds much wider than the speaker, likely from the acoustic lens effects. This would hurt imaging but would be better for a surround speaker.
